Cabin in the Woods
Cabin in the Woods is a new single-family residence perched atop a wooded hill in Southampton, NY. The lower of the two crossing volumes is constructed of traditional stick-built wood framing supported by cantilevered structural steel beams. The construction of the upper volume does not include any structural steel. Instead, the full height of the continuous side stud walls are sheathed with plywood on the exterior and interior surfaces to create wood box beams that cantilever 20ft. The location and frequency of fasteners attaching the plywood to the studs, creating the box beam behavior, corresponds to the magnitude of internal beam forces. Project lead at Silman.
